OVERVIEW
:
 
The Sailing Master has responsibility for the successful promotion and operation of the various boating programs of the Northport Point Yacht Club (NPYC). These include daily instruction in the Recreation Program, administration of sailing races for boats of various sizes, and instruction for both group and private sailing lessons. Additionally, the Sailing Master will oversee the management and care of the NPYC fleet of boats. The Sailing Master will report directly to the NPYC Commodore but will also work cooperatively with the Director of the Recreation Program. In turn, the Sailing Master will supervise the Assistant Sailing Master who will assist in conducting the above program.
 
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
 
1)      At the beginning of the summer:
a.       Introduce yourself to the rest of the Beach Staff and the Director, depending on who has arrived already. These people will be your roommates and friends for the summer.
b.      Plan to meet with the NPYC Executive and Race Committees. The Commodore will assist in arranging this.
c.       Wash, rig and launch all NPYC boats with the help of the NP Service Company. Fill all fuel tanks in the patrol boats.
d.      Equip the patrol boats with all necessary race equipment.
e.       Plan rainy day lessons in coordination with the Beach Recreation Program Director.
2)      Recreation Program: In close collaboration with the Recreation Program Director, organize and run the instructional sailing program for kids aged 5 through 13 from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 noon, Monday through Friday. Wednesdays are “special days” where something unusual is planned.
3)      Saturday Afternoon Races: Typhoons & Lidos race each Saturday promptly at 2:30p.m. Thursday afternoons are used for make-up races in the event of a cancellation. Duties include course set-up, help with rigging and launching the Lido fleet, and assistance to the Race Committee during the race.
4)      Yacht Club Check: On a daily basis, check to be sure the yacht club itself is tidy and picked-up after Recreation Program activities and NPYC meetings. Make sure the NPYC equipment room is in order. Keep the Lido fleet looking orderly and neat. The yacht club/post office is a central place in the life of Northport Point, and the NPYC must look its best there all the time.
5)      Boat Check: On a daily basis, be sure Lido, sunfish, pram and powerboat fleets are properly secured, properly bailed and stored in an orderly fashion.
6)      Emergency Check: On a daily basis, be certain the NPYC powerboat fleet has plenty of fuel and other equipment (spare lines, life preservers etc) for emergency rescue needs. This means at least one full 6-gallon fuel can in the Whaler or at least ˝-tank in the Wellcraft.
7)      NPYC/NBYC Race: Each July, the NPYC races the local yacht club in an informal handicap regatta featuring boats of all sizes. Duties include assisting the Commodore and Head of the Race Committee to make sure all goes well.
8)      NPYC All Boat Sailing Picnic: Each August, the NPYC holds this informal event in conjunction with its annual meeting. Duties include participation in whatever manner is most helpful.
9)      Attend all NPYC meetings and make reports when necessary.
10)  Help private boat owners launch and rig their own boats. Your time will be billed to owner through the NP Club administrative assistant.
11)  Help the Northport Point Safety Committee promulgate and enforce all safety rules for both sail and motor.
12)  Note repairs and equipment needed by the fleet of NPYC boats by contacting the Commodore or Rear Commodores with your needs.
13)  Have fun! Northport Point is one of the greatest places in the world to spend your summer. This could be one of the best summers of your life. Enjoy it.
14)  At the end of the summer:
a.       Inventory all equipment.
b.      Prepare a final parts and repairs list for the Commodore.
c.       Wash & prepare all boats for storage.
d.      Coordinate fleet storage with NP Service Company.
e.       Write a brief report of the summer for the Yacht Club Commodore.
